Post subject:  Re: South Beloit Illinois - Beta & Gamma Radiation Station

Recently I started an outdoor radiation station monitoring system. Previously I had the unit in the house, but now I have it outside because this is the only way to detect the outside beta radiation. By using the GQ GMC-200 geiger counter outside I not only get outside detection of beta radiation levels, but I have it connected to an air purifier filter for better detection rates. The results have been very good (as in detection of highs & lows) when compared to my nearest EPA site, located in Madison Wisconsin.

Why is outside air beta radiation detection so important?

ABC Channel 10 News wrote:
"We should take this very seriously," said Joseph Mangano, the executive director of the New York-based Radiation and Public Health Project, which researches the impact of nuclear power.

The group obtained results of eight air samples conducted by the EPA in San Diego in the month and a half after the nuclear disaster began.

It found that beta radiation levels in San Diego were more than six times the normal amount. While those are still low levels, the group says its numbers show the radiation may have harmed children.

Lets compare my recent reading with the EPA site nearby.

Here is my outside geiger counter (GMC-200) on the face of an air purifier running 24/7.

Below is the EPA site graph. Where you see the station ID as 4: that tells me it's a beta site

I do not know exactly what make & model of equipment the EPA are using. The actual CPM reading is not what I am trying to point out, rather the fact that my chart goes up and down with theirs. I do find it amazing that both of these readings are so close together in CPM, but again what is really important here is that both graphs go up and down at the same time.

Last week around May 1-2 of 2013 I started to notice sites in Japan near Fukushima start to climb up and up for several days in a row. Below is the graph of just one of those sites. Please note that the dates and time on these graphs are constant so no conversion is needed.

Then about 3 days after the first spike on May 2, 2013 (seen on the Fukushima Japan graph above) I seen those same patterns on my real-time outside geiger counter (GMC-200) on an air purifier as seen below. Looking at my Beloit/South Beloit outside graph, I see that currently I have 4 of the 5 obvious spikes from the Fukushima graph. I believe that I will get rain tomorrow so I hope that don't cause my readings to become distorted so much I will not be able to see clearly the 5th spike pattern.

Here is the nearest EPA site to me, Madison Wisconsin. The station ID 5: means it's a gamma site and I know this graph uses the EPA energy channel 5.

The filter was changed on 07/10/2013.

Please ignore the 83 CPM spike I received on this day because I turned the power off and back on which caused this spike.

Today in the a.m. I have very heavy fog and with it came high radiation readings for my outside unit.

As I recently read through this thread, I noticed that I failed to finish reporting on the radiation detections/events noticed in May of 2013. Above I posted on May 8th about the detections/events but failed to follow up with a graph showing the complete detections.

Here is that graph and when compared to the one from Japan, I think it speaks for itself.

This week has been very bad

These detections were verified using both a pancake unit and my Polimaster PM1703MO.

Today looks like it might be an interesting day. So far I have started the day with an a.m. high that is very close to my high of April of 2013.

do you have a second unit right there to verify your readings???

I have verified these higher reading by two different 10-minute averages taken with my InspectorEXP outside.

Both of these tests with my InspectorEXP verify the higher reading shown on my GMC-200 (on air purifier outside) graph readings in the a.m. and the lower one just recently.

My basement unit makes a good backup system too because I see the outside reading rise show up shortly after on my basement unit.
