So just to get back to this, as you can see my readings have returned to normal after seeing a definite rise starting around mid January and going through late February. I did absolutely noting to the interior of my house, didn't move the counter, didn't change an furnace filter (have boiler heat) didn't change a vacuum filter (only use a Romba robo vac that gets emptied after each use) didn't add any furniture and had no visitors during that window. My environment was nearly static for several months. Also as someone pointed out when my counter was knocked off the window sill, this was in my old house about 300 yards down the street and was quite a while before the readings started to spike. So I don't believe that this was a counter problem although I can see where that would be possible thus why I tested and confirmed with several other counters.

During that time I was able to verify increases with my other counters. What I couldn't do is verify the percent increase with the other counters as they were all different makes and models, with 2 being pancake units, but I didn't have any of them running continuously and attached to logging software. I tried with my GMC-300 that I carry with me but couldn't get the GQ software to work and didn't have much time to spend on messing with it.

So this was NOT an issue with my counter and appears to have been an actual increase in readings but from what I do not know.

I do have two crawl spaces in my house, 1 is in a 1/2 basement with a 5 foot wall that has the crawl on the other side, which is right under my computer room where my monitoring station is. So I am going to go get a radon test kit to see if that is a concern.

Additionally I will be watching King Cobra's station (1:EB5A139C - South Beloit, Illinois) to see if a rise at his location correlates to increased readings in my location, which there does seem to be some loose correlation at this point. ... 6831#p6831

Interesting (and very smart) you would mention boiler heat.

What is the fuel? I don't imagine it's coal (hoping not), more likely it's fuel oil but this could be the prob...

Fuel oil residue/soot is very toxic (especially in the lungs ) and may register on your counter as it breaks down.

No need to mention the Rad potential of coal as I'm almost sure you are familiar with the coal burning power plants emissions of mercury and other dangerous (some radioactive) substances.

Check venting (Professional?) and BE CAREFUL as asbestos was commonly used as the insulation for pipes and the boiler itself.

May be on to something there.

Also with a boiler Carbon Monoxide is a worry so make sure you have a working detector (or 2) running full time!!!

Your counts are a bit higher that I would expect to see and there is a reason for it.

Good to hear from you...

Let us know what you find out!
