New station working since 12/2013. Located on Punchbowl hill above downtown. GMC-320 geiger monitor in East facing window, gets exposure to prevailing NE tradewinds and rain.
Many people believe Hawaii must be 'Hot' since we are closer to Fukushima than mainland US. Truth is our CPMs are low and have not significantly increased since the accident. A study of the prevailing winds and ocean currents will explain why. Circulation is CW around the North Pacific Ocean, and any plume travels first to Alaska and down the West coast US before reaching tropical waters and then turns west. Hawaii is actually farther downwind than California!
That said, I have stopped eating Pacific Tuna, though (which I loved!). Future investigations I hope to get some readings on locally caught fish.
