Spokane, Wash. (AP) -- A portion of a storage tunnel that contains rail cars full of radioactive waste collapsed Tuesday morning, forcing an emergency declaration at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in southeastern Washington state.

Officials detected no release of radiation and no workers were injured, said Randy Bradbury, a spokesman for the Washington state Department of Ecology.

There were no workers inside the tunnel when it collapsed. But nearby Hanford workers were evacuated and others who were farther away were told to remain indoors, the U.S. Department of Energy said.

Hanford is located near Richland, about 200 miles southeast of Seattle.

Hanford for decades made plutonium for nuclear weapons and is now the largest depository of radioactive defense waste that must be cleaned.

It contains about 56 million gallons of radioactive waste, most of it in 177 underground tanks.

As I reread through the original article above, I notice some of the parts I quoted are now missing. For example the nearby workers being told to shelter in place indoors. I see at the top of the article page it shows the article being edited. This is just one good example of how they cover up.

"Cover up" is putting it mildly! This is way bigger than any of the press releases have indicated. But, reading between the lines it is possible to glean the magnitude of this event.

On a more personal note, I have spent the last year processing an EEOICPA (Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act) claim for my mothers pancreatic cancer which probably resulted from her 14 year employment at the Y-12 Plant here in Oak Ridge, Tn and I have been stunned by the true horror of what goes on in this industry.

Now with Fukushima and events like this Hanford inevitability the high priests of this technology are going to have more and more explaining to do. We'll see how that goes...

Go figure, history repeats itself. Anytime after a nuclear accident the public is always told there has been no nuclear releases but then later when it is too late to avoid being contaminated, the public is told that there actually has been a nuclear release.

Authorities at Washington state's Hanford nuclear waste site are investigating a possible leak after discovering radioactive material on a worker's clothing. The discovery follows an incident early last week in which a site tunnel collapsed, sparking fears of radiation exposure.
