HELLO HURRICANE IRMA!

It doesn't surprise me that these company officials say these things, anything to calm the public.

Quote:
“For the top of the plant to be underwater ... if there were flooding on the plant, we could absolutely stay safe,” Robbins told TC Palm. “We designed the plant to handle that, the systems at the plant to handle that.”

I find this quote from the plant spokesman interesting. What he is saying is that the safest way to shutdown a nuclear reactor is slowly over a few days. The emergency SCRAM shutdowns that we hear about all the time as being so safe, actually puts large amounts of stress on all the equipment and if failure was to happen it likely would during this process. I've been told it's like the difference between brining you car to a slow stop vs. a screeching hult.

QUOTE:
Quote:
"Peter Robbins, spokesman for Florida Power and Light, said shutting down a reactor is a gradual process, and the decision will be made “well in advance” of the Category 5 storm making landfall."
