Dominion Energy said this week it had filed an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to renew Surry Power Station's operating licenses for an additional 20-year term, which makes it the third nuclear plant in the country to seek permission to operate its reactors for up to 80 years.
The plant has already been granted one subsequent license renewal (SLR). It now joins the Turkey Point units 3 and 4, both Westinghouse Three-loop Pressurized Water Reactors, operated by Florida Power and Light, and Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Plants units 2 and 3, both Mark 1 Boiling Water Reactors, operated by Exelon Generation, as nuclear power facilities with applications filed a second 20-year license extension.
