Post subject:  ELEVATED READINGS ALL DAY AFTER FREAK DOWNPOUR

Here in Northern California we have been in drought conditions and consistently dry for over a month. Early this morning, at 3:45 there was a sudden torrential downpour which lasted only 10 minutes and since then the readings from my Redding, CA station have been mostly elevated to Radcon 2 levels. Later I plan on taking my portable Geiger counter outside and doing a survey on our property especially where rain water has collected to see if there is a correlation.

The correlation is this...

...nothing worse than a sprinkle mid afternoon after a drought!!!

This is why the LA Freeway is a prob from time to time (rode it many times on a motorcycle).

The steam only suspends the particles (as opposed to a full on wash), with all the fires and other problems it's not a wonder that you are seeing elevated reads...

Take precautions for the next few!!!!!

Post the reads and I'll (we'll all) take a look at them...

I don't think (my opinion only) that you are in trouble on this...

I would take precautions if I were you! Simply because we can!!!

Simple caution...

Hoping for a real rain at any time!

I'd like to jump in that glass of ice water (carlsbad) now!!!

PLEASE send me your reads so we can look at them further and I will get back too you!

Promise...

Ron;
Did your spot readings show any higher values at rainwater pools? Whatever you saw yesterday, the raw data charts for your station don't seem to show a big change now; the current week 10 minute averages don't seem to go above 20 CPM. It looks like the levels went down afterward. The rain could have washed down some naturally occurring airborne radon, which decays quickly.

Remember that water shields radiation from being detected. Often people use a paper towel to wipe an area and ring out the water, then test. Rubber gloves are advised as basic protection, all rainwater could be contaminated at anytime. Put the sample in a ziplock bag and seal. Write on it date and time, then test again in 4 hours to compare. After 8 hours likely the readings will return to background levels, people say this is a result of the high radon levels after they decay away. I once tested an 800 CPM sample using my InspectorEXP. Radon or not, I do not want that stuff touching my skin... I avoid rain.

it's true that radon decays quickly. but so does I-131 not that it's a problem right now but you need to get into the habit "just in case". I agree with KC that this is probably not a problem at this time but be prepared and get into the habit now as it could happen at any time... Best too start to take precautions now so if (and when) it happens you are protected... I took a look at the reads in your area and it does't look like your in any real danger but...

Take precautions with any air filter you handle (and always wear a P-100 mask when cutting grass or blowing outdoor debris), look for any unusual reads on your GC and (for sure) consider no air filter or vacuum bag safe!!! Too many water borne animals are showing up dead to take anything for granted at this point... I (personally) think that the PU and SC/SR reads are a real problem but it appears they are water born (as opposed to airborne) at this point. I don't eat ANY fish, muscles/clams, MUSHROOMS FOR SURE!!! or shrimp as simple precautions...

And you should send a sample to http://radtest4u.com ASAP...

Good luck guy's...

...PM me anytime!

I don't want people to misunderstand me, I do believe it is a problem... both the radon and I-131 if found. I try to avoid all of it. If it is detected by my geiger counter, I want to avoid it. I do agree to avoid the sea food and nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen says he does not eat out of the Pacific anymore because of Fukushima.

Sorry for the delay in updating but we haven't had any rain since that freak downpour, thanks to our geoengineering team and their constant painting lines of particulates in the Northern California skies.

One phenomenon I have observed here: the atmosphere is apparently loaded with hot particles! I have multiple Sharper Image Ionic Breeze air cleaners working 24/7, 4 in the living room and 5+ here in my shop where I do electronics repair as a business. These filters consist of chromed steel strips that are wiped with a damp paper towel to clean the attached particles attracted to them through electrostatic means. After cleaning even one filter and laying the paper towel on a second GC320 here, the normal background average of 14 CPM jumps to between 35 and as high as 100 CPM and decays as the towel drys over the next couple of hours to 16 or so avg CPM. Not sure if the moisture activates the emissions of the dirt collected or if what I am reading is Radon, which has a short half life. This makes me want to put these things everywhere to make breathing apparently a lot safer.
