Does anyone have any insight regarding why the count went so high in Champaign Urbana Aug 31st?? I grew up there and still have family and friends who're there, so I'm concerned....

Sadly it could be caused by a laundry list of things. Although 100 sounds low for an EPA station.

Here is the link to that station for other subscription members to look at it:

Sorry, I missed that. I just now looked at the graph and not only did that EPA gamma station reach the 1001 CPM that you mentioned but it is a record high for that station. According to NETC records for that station, the first recorded readings for that station are August of 2012. Until this 1001 CPM reading on August 31st of 2015, there have been NO HIGHER readings recorded.

Your concern is very warranted, because as you know I am sure... most EPA gamma stations never have record a 1000 CPM or higher.

As I review other radiation monitoring stations around the one in question, I do not see any noticeable pattern to give me a clue of the source for that 1001 CPM detection. The Clinton Nuclear Plant, which is located nearby to the West, had a refueling back in the end of April start of May and the reactor status information around August 31st does not look like there were any problems. Time will tell though, because the release of the NRC EVENT reports are always delayed.

Even if information does come to light showing an accident/release happened, what can be done now to protect those in the path?

The answer is, NOTHING! The EPA data is delayed from reaching the public, they do a data dump every 6+ hours. This is why it is so important for people to setup their own monitoring station, outside like the EPA does.

Thanks for info. It might have occurred from something released from the University and most probable it won't be revealed.
It's good to put the question out there nevertheless.

You are correct. By asking the question you bring attention to the high reading, thank you.

Speaking of University, checkout the NRC event page for September 3, 2015. The Tulsa Oklahoma University had a radiation leak that I can't find any news media coverage for it.
