Today I noticed the McDonald Kansas NETC radiation monitoring station was showing RADCON 5 ALERT status seen here: https://s14.postimg.org/y86j7attd/Screenshot_2017-12-31_at_10.00.00_AM.png I decided to do a little research for myself to try and verify how serious I can take that stations readings. First I looked at the station ID which is 1:EB9576ED and seeing the 1: in the ID I know that it is actually a private monitoring station, not an EPA RadNet station.

Next, I looked at the stations previous data to see how long the station has been up and what its previous readings have been, this helps me to determine how reliable the stations readings are. It appears the station has been running about a year now and looking at the previous readings, it appears they have been reliable. Now lets take a closer look at the most recent elevated reading that caused the station to go in to RADCON 5 ALERT status. https://s14.postimg.org/8x6f4eskh/Screenshot_2017-12-31_at_10.40.18_AM.png You can see that there was a climb then fall and then another climb that was larger in the graph. These two look valid to me so I have no reason to doubt the readings.

Lets look even closer at those recent elevated readings. As you can see, both of those readings were a slow climb. https://s14.postimg.org/59m2kqkqp/Screenshot_2017-12-31_at_10.22.49_AM.png The reading that reached 101 CPM did climb slowly during the a.m. hours reaching 101 CPM at 5:10 a.m. and this pattern also helps me to confirm in my own mind that it was NOT a malfunction. I say this because these are the same patterns I've witnessed on my own station. The concerning thing to me is actually how high the reading was able to reach, 101 CPM.

If the owner and operator of this station sees this post, please add any information or comments. If your a visitor to NETC and this post helped you understand more what we do here, please reply with a thank you.
