Post subject:  San Diego Station providing no data since yesterday

For over an hour this morning (3 am Tues 3 Dec) my GMC 300E has been reading 4000CPM ++ (now seeing 6800CPM) rather steadily. The San Diego Netc Station has been providing no data since yesterday. The Netc station 5 mi from Vista actually shows a very large spike yesterday. Downloaded this Vista data. I hope this is a coincidence.

To be clear. my GMC 300E has been showing the same intermittent 1000+++ spikes I mentioned earlier on the blog which are only becoming longer, more frequent and larger since 22 November.

Is there any known GMC 300E failure pattern that could do this? This is the first time that the spikes (spike = a collection of several high and varying readings) have become this high and also persist for so long. In between spikes, readings are totally normal.

So far, trying to keep this quiet but what do you recommend? These readinsg are quickly looking unhealthy to me. OK for now, but it won't take long to be a problem for me.

Thanks.

My first recommendation would be to get another GC, so that you can compare readings, side-by-side for troubleshooting. One of the least expensive options is the GC-200 at $85 plus shipping. However, if there is a question whether your 300E is working accurately, you may not want to spend further money with that brand, until the issue is rectified.

Are these readings on your GMC-300E showing on the units screen or through some software you are feeding the data to from the geiger counter? Again as I posted in one of your previous threads/posts where I asked you questions but did not receive any answers...

Is your unit inside or outside?

In order for your GMC-300E to read those CPM on the units original screen, the radiation would really have to be high. I find it unbelievable that readings that high outside as background radiation would go undetected by anyone else. Having said that, you do need some way to verify that your readings are correct. As JohnD already mentioned, you need another geiger counter to compare. This is something I learned when I first started and only had one geiger counter. Without a second unit, you have no proof that the readings are real... even if they are. As more private stations are setup there will be less of a need for that second unit because we will be able to use nearby stations to confirm our readings/detections but until then, a second unit is always a good idea.
