"RADCON 5 Alerts have been reported in both Austin, Texas as well as Grand Junction, Colorado as shared in the screenshots below from the Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center – NETC. Radiation levels are also way above normal background levels in St. George, Utah and Augusta, Georgia".

I am Station ID: 1:EBE9D457, which is inside, on the window sill with the window open 1/4" 24/7. I do realize that could cause the reading to be off, but about once a week, I take the unit outside so that I can compare the inside/outside readings, and to tell the truth, my drafty 80 year old house, and the outside read almost identical every time.

With that being said, the article referenced above...why is it that Augusta GA has a tendency to read higher, as does Atlanta, even with my unit outside?

The station you are speaking of is an EPA gamma site: Station ID 5:816 Saint George, UT, US

http://netc.com/chart/view.php?n=5%3A816 ---- Chart Members Only ----

The EPA uses an air filter type system to assist in collecting the radiation:

The EPA also use a scintillation counter which have a higher CPM than a geigier counter.

This is a great section to help get everyone new to radiation up to speed.

Here is a link to a thread that also talks about the air purifier detection system that we as private users can use/make and it does make a BIG difference.

https://www.netc.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=460

While it is possible to see a rise outside vs. inside on your geiger counters readings without using an air purifier system to assist, it will be harder. If your not collecting the data (for example using NETC) and not viewing the data as a whole using a chart, again it will likely be missed.

Some geiger counters like my InspectorEXP has a built in feature to do a 10 minute test where it counts all the CPM over 10 minutes and then I divide that by 10 to get the average CPM. This is standard practice among users/experts. This might be nice for field testing, but any geiger counter running on NETC will allow you to see the current 10 minute average too.

Alerts are pointless for Colorado... I am pretty sure we will be glowing soon.

Can you elaborate more.

Between all the testing in the ranges in the past, the illegal night time waste burning at the Rocky Mountain Flats, and the elevation... those are the reasons we are leaving.

Sorry to hear that, but I understand. With all the dry weather I believe we will see another bad year for California fires too.

Oh No! Stay Safe!!!! Add those to my list too :(

Oh - the illegal burning? Sorry, I meant in reference to the nuclear waste they used to burn off in the middle of the night at the Rocky Mountain Flats near Denver. If I had ever known what went on in this city before I moved here.... sheesh.... *facepalm*
