Post subject:  St L Landfill Update: Value of Public Radiation Monitoring

In September 2013, Harlan took a trip to a landfill holding radioactive waste in St. Louis. He documented the trip on this site. Referred to as the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, MO (a small municipality in St. Louis County), the landfill harbors some of the most dangerous waste left over from WWII and the Cold War era. The community has been seeking a decision to dig up and move the waste for decades.

No longer willing to take the word of the EPA and the landfill owner, the community empowered its self with a means of monitoring radiation levels on their own.

This past week, armed with a $16,000 GammaPal device, alarming readings (taken at a nearby community recreation center less than a mile from the landfill) were gathered by private citizens of the surrounding community and presented to the EPA.

It would seem that possessing the ability to gather their own monitoring data is going to put a whole new level of empowerment in the hands of citizens who have for too long been unable to make headway in their arguments. Certainly the local media is standing up and taking notice.

I wish the community all the best and encourage others in like-situations to consider taking similar actions. Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes. Arm yourselves with data that speaks for its self.
