Good. Because the EPA has turned off 17 of the 99 gamma stations in one week, 20% down. They seem to be inactivating the highest number ones. You might want to look at the members only forum and see the numbers. Also, you can look at the mapsite and click on inactive sites now. They are black and white. There are lots. Regards :-)

All Active : 279
Active Private: 54
Active EPA Beta: 41
Active EPA Gamma: 101
Active Japan Limited: 83
Active Japan Full: 2699

Bizarre. I am missing one post here from yesterday in which the Beta EPA site number was down to 30, and the GAMMA site numbers were down to 79, just 12 hrs ago. Oh yes, and japan limited down to I think 75. Now they are all back up to where they were a week ago when I started these posts, and Active Japan full monitoring stations is up from 2656 to 2699 - and the RADCONS are way up, which takes some doing on an island that has CPM numbers of 144,000 at Fukushima #1 - look at the rainbow of RADCON colors
(this is only available to the chart members who paid the whole $20.00 /year cost to be a member and have posting privileges, woohoo) So - if there were turn-offs going on of radiation collection stations, they appear to now be on again. Fascinating. . . Guess I will have to dig into the piggy bank to fund a geiger counter of my own and hook it up. However, to be fair - the weather this week might have knocked out a few of these stations.

I am new to this forum and considering purchasing a GC. What I am having trouble understanding is if the NORM value is constantly being recalculated how do you get an accurate value on what the radiation level in your particular location has changed between pre-Fukushima and the present? I'm sorry if this question has been asked and answered before, please give a new observer some patience.

Hi, you are on page six of this forum. Go to page one, and read p 1-6. Especially read everything by hey and King Cobra. That should get you started, at least it did for me. :-)

Thanks, I started doing that already and I hate to admit it, but I still have trouble understanding. Will try again. Best Regards.

You know, I thought that very thing after I posted and logged off. And so I have to tell you that I don't have it all down pat either, but I find that if I go over and over stuff at least three times very slowly, I usually get an idea. And it will take a while for me, too. I just keep reading every question answered by hey the administrator, and then go watch all the videos suggested. It helped for the alpha beta and gamma radiation. A lot of those old 50's videos on Youtube are a hoot, but accurate and fun to watch. Also, if you click on all the sites you are interested in, and click on the long-term data for each in the white box, it helps for long-term background trends. Click on absolutely everything on the map, too. :-)

This is a must read for newbies, because without first understanding the terms... you will not understand anything.

Monitoring Sites
All Active : 284
Active Private: 56
Active EPA Beta: 43
Active EPA Gamma: 102
Active Japan Limited: 83
Active Japan Full: 2697

This is as of Jan 9 - so the number of monitoring sites is up by 57 total since last week,NOT counting Japan Full. The number of private sites is up by 7 in the last week, and the number of new members is increasing by about 1 per hour - over 200 new members in 10 days.

I am finding that if I keep switching back and forth from Relative to Absolute Values (right side of map, it's only available to see if you are a member) on each site I keep track of, it familiarizes me with the background numbers. Without the Member Available chart map, you are missing information for calculations.

There is a thread here on 101 things for newbies, but I keep not being able to find it on the forum, and you HAVE to read it to begin to understand what is going on. This is school, folks - and since this last week of education is kind of a shock for me, I figure it is for everyone, so hang in there, it'll start to sink in if you just keep reading and clicking all over on the map.
