10:50 CST a.m on 09/11/2013 I replaced the outside filter on the air purifier.

For those people who are considering an outside geiger counter unit but are not sure if it is worth having the geiger counter on the face of an air purifier filter in an attempt to concentrate the radiation particles outside in the air filter for better detection... please see the graph below.

I wanted to point out to others using my graph a few things:

1. Having your unit outside does make a difference & on a purifier is even better.
2. My area has seen a rise in August that seems to have created a new "N.O.R.M." background for me.
3. When reading the graphs, if all three of the graphs (red, blue & green) do not match, ignore the reading.

Another interesting look at my outside graph. ;)

Today I hit my record high on my outside geiger counter radiation monitoring station. Even as I type this, I hear my outside NETC Raspberry Pi / GMC-200 (on an air purifier) speaking to me each current CPM above the 32 CPM warning level I have preset. I try not to speak about CPM levels on this forum, because too many get confused. Different model geiger counter models give different CPM so you can not always compare CPM for CPM unless you know they uses like GM tubes.

For my stations current setup, the average is 27cpm and it alerts me by speaking the current CPM every time a CPM goes 32 or over. This alert is an alert that I setup through the Raspberry Pi menu/settings. It is a local alert, nobody on the public map sees it. When I we start hearing these alerts, we come inside the house.

I know we recently had a CME and the impact from it was said to be today near afternoon time, but I expected any radiation from it to be mostly gamma. What I am detecting seems to be mostly beta or I would have seen my pancake unit (1st floor) in my house going up which I have not. The rise does seem to show on my basement unit also around the same times. I remember reading somewhere that CME's cause EQ's and that before EQ's (sometimes days in advance) excess amounts of radon gas come out of the ground. Maybe this is the cause, I am not sure.

Hi Cobra,

Yes there was a CME with an impact early morning Wednesday October 2nd. There was a long duration low level C-Class flare and two low level C-Class flares since Wednesday. If there is any correlation with your readings you can utilize the charts here: http://www.lmsal.com/solarsoft/latest_events/

I would be curious to see your continued readings at the end of the week. Hopefully more theories will develop based on the analysis. I fear that there could have been a large release of material from the plants. From my observations via NETC.com and RadiationNetwork.com there seems to be a new normal average CPM level setting in for the entire United States. It's very hard to say what is actually happening in Japan and I have no faith in their ability to report the information accurately.

I just now 10-09-2013 @ 4:22 p.m. CST removed AC supply to my outside GMC-200, on internal battery only.

I just now 10-10-2013 @ 5:09 a.m. CST connected AC power to my outside GMC-200 again.

I was testing to see if there was any change in my graph.

I hope to review and post my findings here within 48 hours.

Edit: 10-13-2013 @ 10:06 p.m. CST
I am happy to report that my geiger counter seems to pass the test, no problems seen thus far.

she talks about geiger counters at 46:00.
rad chick is up in michigin.

sounds to me like she needs to read your thread concerning collection methods. i can see by your chart the importance of using an air purifier.

Thank you for sharing that, I have heard many of her Nuked Radio programs and with as much information that she has gained using her own geiger counter (even if it only picks up 2% of the nearby/present radiation like she said) it is depressing that in the audio link you shared that she would discourage others from buying one. I do not believe her model of geiger counter even has an audio/data out so therefore it could not even be connected to NETC. Having a geiger counter connected to NETC or simply being able to view all the data downloaded to a spreadsheet really makes patterns easy to see. Without a geiger counter, we are clueless and with the GMC-200 as little as $85 everyone should have a geiger counter. The GMC-300 is great too and makes a nice unit should you need to evacuate. I think every weather radio should come with a basic geiger counter in it.

I want to believe that she might have, in a very short time available in that broadcast before a break, tried to express how geiger counters are not full proof. To the nuclear newbie, that short clip sure made geiger counters sound like a waste of money which is clearly wrong. Not every geiger counter is equal (as newbies quickly figure out with research) and anyone who owns a scintillation counter likely also owns a pancake geiger counter. The reason for that is because (as you likely know - I'm explaining it here for the nuclear newbies) a scintillation counter ONLY detects gamma where a pancake geiger counter like my InspectorEXP detects alpha, beta, gamma & x-ray. When dealing with nuclear plant fallout (local or Fukushima) where gamma is found, it is likely beta will also be found. Think of yourself on a beach and a scintillation counter like the shovel and the geiger like a metal detector. The geiger counter is used like a metal detector would be to do quick & easy searches for the source. The scintillation counter (shovel) is only used after the source has been found/detected. Obviously with a metal detector it would be for metal and with a geiger counter it would be for anything radioactive. A scintillation counter often requires long testing periods to confirm or deny something and there is much room for error of detections. The error can be the result of many different things, for example poor setup/calibration of the equipment before testing, lack of isotope knowledge by the user or changes in temp during testing to name a few.

RadChick does a great job when she points out an important area everyone should focus on, with or without a geiger counter....OUR FOOD!

The name of the game is radiation mitigation now thanks to all this nuclear fallout. Our biggest threat is internal radiation from what we eat vs. external radiation. I try to avoid it all the best I can, this is why I have geiger counters running 24/7 on NETC. Do not trust a geiger counter to test your food for radiation. There are different foods that will more likely be higher risk for radiation than others. Some of those foods would be anything from the ocean (thank you Fukushima) mushrooms, dairy or anything from the West Coast. I believe the question is nolonger "Does our food have radiation contamination in it" but rather "How much radiation is in it."

Do not freak out people! When I said "seemed normal" in the snapshot below, what I ment was my NORM/normal level for my station. Considering there was rain, we can expect to see higher levels. Clearly looking at the 7-day graph you see higher levels than today. I was just surprised to not see the radiation climb sooner off my NORM level. Although, I still suggest though that everyone STAY OUT OF THE RAIN!
